I just can't sympathise with characters who experience tragedy first hand and then go and inflict that same trauma on others with minimal or no regrets. The twist in regards to Marley and other nations existing didn't bother me but now I'm weary because I like the protagonists of the Marley arc far more than the murderous psychopaths that the original point of view characters have become. Sasha was originally planned to be killed off for example yet was spared due to the creator seeking to appease someone crying in a bathroom when they read the original script.and this was back when she was little more than a bit of minor comic relief.

One of the things I really hate about anime/manga is the insistence on keeping characters around who are just gimmicky or annoying whilst killing off those that are genuinely flawed and engaging. The latter of which should never have survived having his entire body burned to a crisp and then thrown against a rooftop in the first place. Major spoilers below from the recent manga story arcs: Although I still follow the manga loosely I started to lose interest when Erwin was killed off for the sake of pointless drama involving the choice as to whether to save an injured Erwin or an injured Armin. It could just be me though but after it stopped being a story about a small walled city fighting monsters where the odds seemed stacked against you and part of the allure was the wonder about the world the reveal seems to have deflated the whole thing.

So for anyone else still reading did you kind of lose interest with the reveal? i know the plan was originally for everyone to die pre timeskip and it was changed due to series popularity and commercial success but this new post twist story feels almost like when series like stargate got over their core troubles and they revealed new villains to try and jump start the series for a few more years when the story doesnt have the same appeal anymore. Now though they not only revealed that the entire country is a small island off the coast of a european style landmass and everyone is a titan and the mainland humans want them dead but they pulled a timeskip where multiple characters are killed off screen and main characters like eren are murderous sociopaths no better or worse than the titans that attacked them at the start. Personally right from the first few volumes my initial expectations for the series was 'oh so its the village in manga form' and i was honestly expecting the reveal to be 'its the 22nd century and this was a man made virus and the rest of the world is the ruins of modern day' or something similar.

We are told the rest of humanity is dead and its maybe an alternate 1700's.

It was at this point i just kind of dropped the series and apparently i wasn't in the minority as they have reached that point with season 3 of the anime and had to do major rewrites to compensate for this.Īt this point we knew the following: the setting is a city surrounded by wilderness and ruined buildings swarmed by titans.

The manga got very political and spent 3 full volumes with no titans in it as a military coup occurs. Then slowly it kind of got forgotten to a degree. One day it showed up and the next every convention was full of cosplayers in survey corps outfits and it was the next big hit manga to break into the west. So Attack on Titan was a bit of a flash in the pan deal.
